Second Cong. to host forum on nuclear power

Second Congregational United Church of Christ will host a forum “The Nuclear Environment: Should Nuclear Power be Part of a Greener Future?” The event will be from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, May 25, as part of the church’s Friday Forum Series. Speaker will be Ben Youman, nuclear engineer and operator at the Byron Nuclear Plant.

Concerns about global warming are getting more and more attention. Every bit of oil, natural gas and coal we burn to create energy puts more carbon dioxide, a “greenhouse gas,” into the atmosphere. Nuclear power, once dismissed by those concerned about climate change and the environment, is again being looked at as a possible option for the future.

Friday Forum is a monthly, community-oriented program of Second Congregational Church of Christ, aimed at engaging all members of the Rockford community in issues that matter to us all. Previous speakers have included Chief of Police Chet Epperson, Crusader Clinic CEO Gordon Eggers Jr., and Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I).

The church is at 318 N. Church St. in downtown Rockford. The forum will be in Gordon Chapel (entrance off Church Street). The event is free and open to the public.
