September is National Literacy Month

If you can read this, you are fortunate. Reading is something many of us take for granted, but more than 43,000 adults in this region read at or below fourth grade level. That’s approximately one out of every five adults in Winnebago, Boone and Ogle counties. More than 100,000 read at or below the eighth grade level—a ninth grade reading level is required to just “get by” in today’s society. September is National Literacy Month, and the Literacy Council currently has nearly 100 adults on the waiting list for a volunteer tutor.
