Shelter Care Ministries holds spring luncheon

Shelter Care Ministries’ Executive Director Jered Pruitt announces their annual spring luncheon on Thursday, May 8, at Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club in Rockford. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit Shelter Care’s Emergency and Transitional Housing programs for homeless families.

This year’s fund-raising luncheon features keynote speaker Darlene Marcusson, executive director of Lazarus House in St. Charles, Ill. Marcusson will address the subject of “Raising Lazarus,” based on her experiences as founder and executive director of the St. Charles emergency shelter serving men, women and children. Marcusson has worked with the poor and disenfranchised since she was a teenager, volunteering at prisons and mental institutions as well as working with youths and refugees.

In addition to Marcusson, luncheon attendees will once again hear the inspirational story of a Shelter Care Ministries client whose life has been changed from despair to hope, thanks to a “leg up” from SCM.

“In 2002, Shelter Care Ministries provided 25,727 nights of lodging for 68 families made up of 255 individuals. Families along with their case managers work towards a goal of moving into a permanent house and working towards self-sufficiency in their lives,” Pruitt said.

Last year, more than 300 guests attended the annual fund-raising luncheon, and organizers expect another sold-out crowd at this year’s event. Starting at 11 a.m., luncheon attendees can also browse the SCM Marketplace for Mother’s Day gifts, flowers and baskets donated by local businesses and individuals.

Tickets to the luncheon are available at $35 per person, a table of eight for $280, and a table of 10 for $350 by contacting Shelter Care Ministries at 964-5520.
