Shooting spawns ninth homicide

The City of Rockford has had its ninth homicide of the year. The shooting took the life of 29-year-old Rockford resident John McMurtry.

Police arrived near the intersection of Central Avenue and Morgan Street around midnight Friday, May 19, where they found McMurtry lying near the car he’d occupied, according to a Rockford Police Department press release.

“He got out of the car and collapsed in the street,” Deputy Chief of Police Craig Lindmark said.

Lindmark said McMurtry had been in a 2000 Chrysler 300, but he was unsure where the victim was sitting. Lindmark noted the vehicle’s passenger side received gunshots. McMurtry suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and died as a result of the wounds at an area hospital.

According to Lindmark, a motive is unknown.

“We’re looking into different possibilities. We do not have any suspects in custody, (but) we’re following up on every lead,” Lindmark said.
