Sierra Club director speaks

Blackhawk Chapter Sierra Club will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 24, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4848 Turner St., Rockford.

Special guest will be Bruce Nilles, acting director of the Sierra Club Great Lakes Program, who will speak on “Coughing Up Clean Air Policies.” Nilles has primary responsibility for the Sierra Club’s clean air enforcement in Illinois and oversees staff in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.

The clean air enforcement program educates the public about the dangers of air pollution, holds policy-makers and regulatory agencies accountable to the breathing public, and sues polluters and regulators when other efforts are unsuccessful. The Great Lakes Program is currently focused on cleaning up dirty coal-fired power plants in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota and educating the public about the Bush administration’s unprecedented attacks on our clean air and clean water protections. Nilles previously worked for Earthjustice, a not-for-profit environmental law firm in San Francisco and the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School.

This program is co-sponsored by Rockford Peace & Justice Action Committee as part of their weekly Coffee Talk series.

The program is free and open to the public. Coffee will be provided, and all are invited to participate.
