Singing and swinging at Beloit College

BELOIT, Wis.—The swingle singers will visit the Beloit College campus as the 2005 Victor E. Ferrall Jr. Endowed Artists-in-Residence. The musical group, celebrated worldwide for its vocal virtuosity, will host singing workshops as part of their residency and will give an exciting concert on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m., in Eaton Chapel.

Composed of four women and four men, the swingle singers are young, hip and international—hailing from Britain, Germany, Israel, Scotland and Wales. Now based in London, they were founded by Ward Swingle in Paris in the 1960s as an exploration to utilize unique vocal techniques that combine jazz “skat” singing with choral music.

Their schedule will include a choral workshop with the Beloit College Chamber Singers on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m., and a singing clinic with the Beloit College Vocal Jazz Ensemble on Friday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m.

Admission for the swingle singers is $15 for the general public, $10 for senior citizens and $4 for students. For tickets call (608) 363-2755.
