Snow Sculpting Competition postponed
Snow Sculpting Competition postponed

Due to a lack of snow, the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition has been postponed to Jan. 22-25, 2003.
The event requires 40-50 semi-loads of snow, which is trucked in from the Greater Rockford Airport, and at this time, the airport has no reserves of snow. Temperatures were reported at more than 50 degrees Wednesday, Jan. 8, when the 34 snow blocks were to have been packed in Sinnissippi Park.
Organizers are hopeful that a 3-inch snowfall will occur by Jan. 15, so that snow blocks can be packed for a Jan. 22-25 event. If snow is still insufficient, the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition will be postponed until next year; however, this has not happened in the events 17-year history.
The Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition attracts up to 100,000 visitors to Rockfords Sinnissippi Park each winter. Major sponsors are the Clock Tower Resort, h.c. Johnson Press, Rockford Park District, SwedishAmerican Health System, and WIFR-TV Channel 23. Assistance is also provided by the Illinois Arts Council.
