Snow sculpting postponed

Because of a lack of snow, the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition has been postponed to Jan. 24-27.

The event requires some 40 semi-loads of snow, which is trucked in from the Chicago/Rockford International Airport. The Airport has no reserves of snow, since temperatures reached the 50-degree mark last week, when the sculptors’ blocks were to have been packed in Sinnissippi Park.

Organizers remain hopeful that a 3-inches snowfall will occur in time for packing blocks for a Jan. 24-27 event. If snow is still insufficient, however, the 2007 Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition will be canceled Jan. 19. Cancellation occurred just once (2003) in the event’s 21-year history.

Major sponsors of the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition are Arby’s, h.c. Johnson Press, Rockford Park District, Stockholm Inn, SwedishAmerican Health System, and WIFR-TV Channel 23.

The Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition attracts an average of 50,000 visitors to Rockford’s Sinnissippi Park each winter. It is a featured event of Winter Rocks, a visitor campaign in association with the Rockford area Convention & Visitors Bureau, and hotel accommodations and special stay and play packages are available by calling (800) 521-0849, or
