Special Olympic Games
On Saturday, May 11, at Harlem High School, close to 800 athletes will compete in the Special Olympics Area Spring Games. Athletes will compete in track events, aquatics, boccie ball and soccer. Opening ceremonies will be held at 9 a.m. with a parade of athletes and entertainment by the Christian Life Jazz Band. The Flame of Hope will be lighted by athletes from Opportunity House in Sycamore. Approximately 600 volunteers will help coordinate the event.
Competition will be from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by: Shopko, Zenith Cutter Co., Rockford Park District and Alpine Kiwanis. The Special Olympics Area Spring Games are open to the public, and there is no admission charge. Athletes who receive a first place will advance to the State Summer Games, which will be held at Illinois State University, Normal, on June 21, 22, 23, 2002.
