Spring Metals Recycling Drive set for May 6

LOVES PARK—Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful, the regional affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, will hold its annual Spring Metals Recycling Drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 6, at the Machesney Park Mall parking lot south of the J.C. Penney Outlet Store.

Bring appliances, electronics, copper, aluminum, brass, steel, washers, dryers, water heaters, gutters, storm doors, siding, cell phones, car batteries, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, fencing, metal desks, motors, patio furniture and shelving. If the item is primarily metal, it can be accepted. This is an opportunity to dispose of metal items, regardless of where residents live or work.

Most items can be dropped off at no cost; however, due to EPA regulations and the cost of Freon removal, there is a $10 fee for each air conditioner, refrigerator, freezer and small propane tank. A fee of $20 will be charged per computer monitor.

“Our metals recycling drives offer an opportunity for area residents to get rid of their unwanted metals and electronics,” said Lori Gummow, executive director of Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful. “We are always striving to provide environmentally sound alternatives for disposing of unwanted items.”

Remember, television sets, humidifiers and dehumidifiers are not accepted.

Last year’s spring and fall metals recycling drives collected more than 120 tons of metals, saving vital landfill space.

Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful is in need of additional community volunteers to assist with this year’s drive. Those interested in volunteering can contact the office at 637-1343 or e-mail wrcb@inwave.com.
