State boxing championships at Patriots’ Gateway Dec. 9-10

The Illinois State Silver Gloves Boxing Championships will be this weekend at the Patriots’ Gateway Community Center, 615 S. 5th St. Action will begin at noon, Saturday, Dec. 9, and continue at noon, Sunday, Dec. 10. Adult admission to both days is $10. Children 10 years old and younger are admitted free. All proceeds from the event will be used for the Patriots’ Boxing Club.

Jimmy Goodman Jr. coaches this year’s Rockford team. His squad includes returning state champion, regional champion and 2006 runner-up Ringside World Champion Katrina Senatre. She is 12 years old and a student at RESA middle school.

Another fighter to watch this weekend is D’Angelo Brooks, the 2005 Novice Junior Olympic Champion. He is 11 years old and attends Spring Creek Elementary School.

Teams made of boxers ranging in age from 8 to 13 will come from Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and throughout Illinois to compete in this event. Winners will be looking to advance to the Silver Gloves Regional Championships Jan. 5-7, 2007. That event will also be at Patriots’ Gateway Center.
