Students add artwork to new Justice Center’s Kids’ Place 2

Students from St. Peter’s School, under the direction of art teacher Cindy Buffo, painted friendly animals on the walls of The Kids’ Place 2 in the new Winnebago County Justice Center.

Buffo donated her time to design the original artwork.

The facility opened in July to serve children ages 2-12 while their parents or guardians have courtroom business in the Justice Center.

Kids’ Place 2 is designed to allow the business of the court to proceed more efficiently by offering an alternative to children’s presence in courtrooms.

Just off the lobby, the facility is funded through donations and a nominal filing fee on civil cases. The Kids’ Place 2 will be staffed by YMCA professionals and open 8:15 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Furnishings have been provided by donations from businesses including Entré Computer Solutions and American TV and Appliance, and through a $5,000 grant from the Young Lawyers’ Division (YLD) of the Illinois State Bar Association.

Since June 1998, the Children and Our Courts Foundation has operated the original The Kids’ Place in the courthouse, serving nearly 25,000 children. The original Kids’ Place, also staffed by YMCA professionals, will continue to serve children whose parents or guardians have business in the Courthouse.
