Summer cooling assistance

The City of Rockford Human Services Department Energy Division began offering summer cooling assistance to qualified households in Winnebago and Boone counties July 31. Households occupied by senior citizens, a person collecting Social Security disability or occupied by children 2 years of age or younger, may qualify for up to a $150 credit on their electric bill. Households disconnected from their electric service may also inquire regarding assistance in restoring their service.

Seniors may apply at the following locations:

Seniors living in Boone County may apply at the following:

Keen Age Center, 2141 Henry Luckow Lane, Belvidere, phone 544-9893

Households collecting Social Security disability or have children 2 and younger may apply at the following:

Human Services Energy Division, 555 N. Court St., Suite #301, Rockford, phone 987-5711

Documentation needed at the time of appointment is as follows:

Proof of gross income for 30 days prior to the application date and may not exceed the following limits listed:


1 in household—$1,225

2 in household—$1,650

3 in household—$2,075

4 in household—$2,500

5 in household—$2,925

Copy of household gas and electric bills showing the account numbers

Social Security cards for everyone in the household

Documentation of food stamps, rent assistance or any other benefit paid to any member of the household
