Last year, floods brought significant flood damage to the country, and with the spring rainy season in full effect, more storms will likely cause flooding.

“Homeowners need to know how to react in order to minimize problems caused by heavy rains,” says Austin Reisetter, owner of the Rainbow International® of Loves Park. “Home flooding can cause mold, electrical, carpet and structural damage.”

The Rainbow International of Loves Park offers these water damage tips to residents who find themselves the victim of Mother Nature:

Turn off the electrical breaker, but leave the sump pump breaker on if you have one.

Make plans for the restoration crew to remove and store large articles of furniture on dry carpet, linoleum, garage or other areas unaffected by water damage.

Unplug and remove all small electrical devices that are in contact with wet carpet (after you have turned off the electrical breaker).

Place aluminum foil or plastic baggies under legs of wood furniture that are in contact with wet carpet, especially antiques, so water doesn’t absorb into the furniture.

Hang drapes on coat hangers so they don’t touch the wet carpet.

Remove furniture, books, shoes and paper goods, such as newspaper, to prevent stains and expedite restoration work.

Do not use the vacuum cleaner.

Stay calm. Call a restoration and cleaning professional immediately, before you give water damage and bacteria growth a chance to set in. Be sure to ask these questions before you hire a professional:

Is your company certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)?

Do you use meters to test moisture content in floors, carpets, cushions and walls?

Do you provide daily documentation to prove the home is drying properly?
