As of Oct. 1, Rockford-area residents who are single and older than 30 have a new singles dance to attend.
A joint venture between two local businesses, Dating Solutions and SPOT (Single People Over Thirty), has resulted in the creation of the New Sunday Night Singles Dance and Celebration, held every Sunday evening, 7 to 11 p.m., at the Silver Lounge, 293 Executive Pkwy., north of State and Mulford next to Shogun Restaurant.
The singles dance features fun and entertaining DJs, playing great dance music from the 60s through todays pop dance music. A variety of complimentary appetizers are provided by Shogun Restaurant from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a variety of valuable door prizes given away each week. Another attraction is a variety of singles icebreakers over the next several weeksactivities designed to help singles meet each other in a fun and relaxing atmosphere.
Dating Solutions provides one-on-one connections and singles group activities, which include Speed Dating at the Paragon on Tuesdays. Owner Susan Sunday is a divorced, single parent of two girls. With bachelors and masters degrees in education, she has taught preschool through adult, including directing a federal, gifted, preschool grant program. Facilitating Divorce and Beyond workshops, Sundays combination of life experiences and her personality have helped her to create Dating Solutions, the only locally-owned dating service.
I feel like Im an advocate for the areas singles and want to provide activities where people feel comfortable and have fun, Sunday said. I love seeing people relating to one another, laughing and dancing. Seeing people connecting to one another on various levels gives me a natural high.
SPOT owner Mark Kann recently formed Single People Over Thirty specifically to concentrate on the dance entertainment aspect of their current collaboration, but hopes in the future to expand its scope to include other single activities. Though employed as a software consultant, Kann has been involved in entertainment for more than 20 years. For the past several years, Kann has designed and managed much of the publicity for Pec Playhouse Theatre in Pecatonica, where he had been a volunteer for more than 11 years. From the mid-80s to the early 90s, he founded and operated his own local disc jockey service, with several DJs playing weddings and clubs several nights a week. He recalls what started it allthe singles dance at the Hoffman House in the early 80s, when he was hired as one of the disc jockeys for Sunday night dances. He left to pursue building his own company, but when the time and opportunity was right, I always felt another singles dance was needed and possible.
Earlier this year, Sunday told Kann she was contemplating moving the singles dance she had on Wednesday nights to another location. When I saw the Silver Lounge for the first time, adds Kann, I knew it was the kind of place Id been hoping to find for a new singles dance. Kanns publicity and DJ background and Sundays dating business seemed a good match.
The Silver Lounge, whose owners also own and operate Shogun Restaurant, opened last fall as an upscale modern night club, enjoying much success as a hot dance spot in Rockford. The large capacity and location were some of the features that attracted Kann and Sunday to hold the event there. Their Sunday nights were open, and they were interested in increasing their patron base as well, so discussions began among the three businesses, resulting in a new weekly event for singles in the Rockford area.
Admission is $10 per person. For more information, contact Susan Sunday at Dating Solutions, (825) 621-2786, or visit the Web site, www.datingsolutions.us.
