With just a few weeks left until Election Day, its increasingly urgent that Congress act now to ensure that we all have a chance to vote on voter-verified paper ballots.
Members of Congress will only be in Washington for a couple of weeks before leaving to hit the campaign trail. Weve got to demand immediate action on two key federal bills that would require paper ballots: a Senate bill sponsored by a Republican, Sen. John Ensign, and a House bill sponsored by a Democrat, Rep. Rush Holt.
Please call your senators and representative now:
U.S. Sen. Richard J. Durbin, Washington, D.C.: 202-224-2152
U.S. Sen. Peter G. Fitzgerald, Washington, D.C.: 202-224-2854
U.S. Rep. Donald A. Manzullo, Washington, D.C.: 202-225-5676.
Urge your senators to Please co-sponsor Senator Ensigns Voting Integrity and Verification Act, # S 2437.
Urge your representative to Please co-sponsor Rep. Holts Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act, # HR 2239.
Please let us know youre calling, at: www.moveon.org/callmade7.html?id=3689-4255056-eyQ7QHtJMcNT0FrGKmW3FQ.
The evidence is overwhelming: electronic voting terminals are susceptible to manipulation before and after voting. If they malfunction, votes may be lost irretrievably. Thats why we should be able to verify our votes on secure paper ballots that can be counted and re-counted.
The Senate and House bills above would require that all electronic voting systems provide a Voter-Verified Paper Ballot, and would make the paper ballot the official ballot of record. Ensigns Senate bill would do this by 2006, and Holts House bill would do it by 2004.
Even a 2006 deadline will help convince state election officials that they shouldnt buy electronic voting terminals this year or next unless they produce Voter-Verified Paper Ballots.
We deserve the most reliable and trustworthy voting systems available anywhere. Please make these calls today.
