The Silver Lounge opens at Shogun

Disco balls, a stage and dance floor, comfortable furniture, private rooms, a banquet hall, and a state-of-the-art bar equipped with a variety of liquors are all featured at The Silver Lounge.

The Silver Lounge, an extension of Shogun restaurant, held its grand opening Nov. 25.

The space was the home of Big & Tall, a men’s clothing store. The owner of Shogun purchased the large space about a year ago, and started building the lounge about six months ago.

The restaurant and the lounge have the same owner, but also have separate directors who run each business. Pojspong Kummun is the director of the Silver Lounge.

Kummun is a club consultant who has helped design, open and run clubs, bars and lounges in many different cities around the U.S., including Chicago and Miami. He said he plans to be dedicated here.

“I will be here for the next couple of years,” Kummun said.

Kummun said the idea of the lounge was to give people a “place you can get off work and enjoy.”

The bar is made of state-of-the-art technology that allows bartenders to create drinks faster and more efficiently. Kummun believes The Silver Lounge is the first bar in Illinois to have such an operation.

The bar is placed in the middle, up against the wall, in a perfect location for anyone to reach at any time. Flat-screen televisions surround the bar to allow customers to watch sporting events or any other main broadcast they would like.

Surrounding the bar are round-topped tables with chairs and enough space to walk around them comfortably. Lining each wall is a cream-color couch with tables nearby to hold drinks. The stage and dance floor face the bar on the opposite wall.

The lighting in the lounge gives the feeling of calmness. The warm glow is intended to ease a stressed mind and help customers relax after a long day of work.

For those looking for a little more than quiet time, there are different entertainment types scheduled throughout the week to help please a variety of audiences.

Even though The Silver Lounge is a 21 and older bar, Kummun wants to keep the entertainment at the lounge as diverse as possible.

“I want to be able to give entertainment to all people, of all ages,” Kummun said.

The entertainment schedule includes music Monday and Tuesday, jazz Wednesday, soul/R&B Thursday, DJs Friday and local bands Saturday.

Kummun hopes to bring big-name entertainment to Rockford, including artists like Babyface and Justin Timberlake.

“I want to sign with people who wouldn’t normally play here,” he said.

The Silver Lounge features a variety of alcoholic beverages. Drinks start at $3.50, but prices can go a lot higher for more unique drinks. The lounge offers a variety of wines, including some not found anywhere else in Rockford.

The lounge also offers sushi, which is served every night until 1 a.m. Other Japanese hors d’oeuvres are also offered.

Besides unique brands of liquor and entertainment, the lounge offers private rooms and a banquet hall to host parties such as rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions and birthday parties. Banquets are the only exception to age limitations.

Kummun wanted to make sure the lounge offered “a little bit of everything for everybody.”

The Silver Lounge, 293 Executive Parkway, is open 4 p.m.-2 a.m., Tuesday-Saturday, and 4 p.m.-midnight, Sunday-Monday. Info: 394-0077 or 394-0777.
