The Wine Cellar: Finding the perfect gift for wine lovers

Once again, it’s that time of year when we all try to find the perfect gift for everyone on our list. Whether you’re buying for a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker, the following gifts will delight anyone. These gifts can be found at almost any retail store.

Wine glasses—Everyone should have a set of wine glasses, regardless of whether he or she is a wine lover. They can always be used when entertaining guests. Basically, you’ll want a set with long, slender stems, and you’ll want the glass to be tulip-shaped. If the person you’re buying for favors red wine, you’ll want the glass to be a little bit bigger than the tulip-shaped ones. You may also want to consider a set of champagne glasses.

Corkscrew—There are many different types of corkscrews; however, my favorites are the “screwpull” and the “waiter’s friend.” Both are small in size, which makes them easy to store. Also, sometimes you can find a corkscrew that comes with a foil cutter. These are nice when cutting the foil from the opening of the wine bottle. Again, everyone should have a corkscrew, regardless of whether he or she is a wine lover.

WineSaver—The WineSaver is a great way to preserve an unfinished bottle of wine. It works by removing the oxygen from the bottle. It often comes in a kit with several bottle stops.

Wine Chiller/Cellar—With a wine chiller or private cellar, as they are sometimes called, you can chill and serve wines at their proper temperature. Many are preprogrammed with the appropriate temperature for a variety of wines, and are able to hold numerous bottles. There are countertop models or some as large as refrigerators. If these are a bit out of your price range, you can always go with a wine rack instead. These also come in various shapes and sizes, including some that hang on the wall.

A book about wine—Many books about wine, which target everyone from the novice to the expert, are available. In addition to books like Wine for Dummies and The Idiot’s Guide To Wine, you can find almost anything you’re looking for, including cookbooks full of recipes that use wine.

A bottle of wine—A bottle of wine is the perfect gift for people who have everything. Of course, it helps if you know whether the person you’re buying for likes red or white wine. If you’re unsure, just stick with a basic wine, such as chardonnay or cabernet. Also, since it’s close to New Year’s, a bottle of champagne might also make a great gift. If you know the person’s favorite wine producer, you can go to their Web site, where the producer often has pre-made gift baskets that include bottles of wine and other items. These can be shipped directly to you.

Miscellaneous—If you’re looking for a small host or hostess gift, some good items to buy are wine charms, coasters and bottle stoppers. These make inexpensive, yet tasteful, gifts.
