Tinker Swiss director steps down

Museum hosts July 9 farewell reception for departing Executive Director Laura Bachelder

Sunday, July 9, from 3 to 5 p.m., Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum will host a farewell reception for departing Executive Director Laura Bachelder. The public is invited to attend at no charge. Refreshments will be served.

The reception will be in the Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum Visitors Center, 411 Kent St., Rockford, with a brief program at 4 p.m.

Bachelder first started at the Museum as its curator in 1997. In 1999, she was named executive director after serving as interim director for two months. Improvements to the historic site made under her leadership include reconstruction of Robert Tinker’s historic suspension bridge; completion of the reconstruction of Tinker’s barn; and construction of a parking lot to better serve the visiting public.

New challenges await Bachelder at Midway Village & Museum Center, where she will again assume duties as curator.

A one-time mayor of Rockford, Robert Tinker built his splendid Swiss Cottage between 1865 and 1870, taking his inspiration from a journey through Europe in 1862. A time capsule of life in the late 19th century, the historic Cottage first opened as a museum in 1943. Tours are available Tuesday-Sunday at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group reservations are available seven days a week between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, call 964-2424 or visit www.tinkercottage.com.
