Tom and Chris Kastle grew up in Chicago, cutting their teeth at clubs and coffeehouses, including such Windy City institutions as the Earl of Old Town, Holsteins and the No Exit. They played pubs while working their way through graduate school (human ecology), traveled to Europe, collecting songs and stories along the way, did some floor singing in Scotland and Ireland, and were featured, with a punk rock band, in concert, at the University of Trondheim (Norway).
In 1985, they started to pursue sailing as a way of life, coming up through the hawse pipe to become professional crew on traditionally rigged sailing ships (Tom is a licensed captain). For more than two decades, the Kastles have garnered a reputation for fine vocal and instrumental work, fascinating stories in word and song, innovative festival workshops and powerful concert sets.
This pair celebrates the bounty and beauty of our earth, both land and sea, with their engaging performances, warm and inviting vocals and skillful instrumentation. They are merchant adventurers who regularly sail out, by boat as well as by van, on voyages of trade and discovery. Their eyes and ears are keen and discerning, and new treasures await on each voyage. As singer-songwriters and storytellers, they arent content just to acquire jewels of beauty and insight, theyre driven to shape and polish, to create an ingenious setting that displays their discoveries to best advantage. They have been internationally acclaimed for their lush harmonies, varied instrumentation (primarily guitar, octave mandolin, concertina and whistles) and captivating stories.
They have performed at festivals, concerts, schools, libraries and on radio and TV throughout the United States and in Canada, Europe and New Zealand. Come and enjoy the treasures they have to share. This concert is a must-see!
