Get ready for a pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration with Tommy Sands, then go acoustic with FRUiT—the Trio as Charlotte’s Web prepares for a groovin’ weekend.

Tommy Sands

Legendary Irish singer, songwriter and social activist Tommy Sands has been praised by Pete Seeger as having achieved “that difficult but wonderful balance between knowing and loving the traditions of his homeland and being concerned with the future of the whole world.”

Sands will be on stage at 8 p.m., Friday, March 11, at Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 415 N. Church St. As an extra treat, he will be doing special presentations at St. Peter’s Cathedral and Maria Montessori earlier on Friday. Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door. The show is cosponsored by The Tin Whistle and Lorden Distributing.

FRUiT—the Trio

From Down Under comes a group that’s tops with audiences everywhere—FRUiT—The Trio. Come and hear them at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12, at Memorial Hall, 211 N. Main St.

Spanning acoustic pop, folk, blues, jazz and deep, rump-shaking groove, and hinting at a musical bloodline that embraces everyone from Dave Matthews to Joni Mitchell, FRUiT’s music has been described as “sensitive… embracing and disarming.”

The frontline women—Susie Keynes and Sam Lohs wielding electric and acoustic guitars, and Mel Watson commanding an arsenal of horns—each sing, write and lock seamlessly with the other to create a vocal blend reminiscent of the great harmonizers of our time. Add to this collaboration the snap-lock brotherly groove of the rhythm section.

The show is cosponsored by WNIJ-FM. Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Tickets are available at Rockford Area Arts Council, 713 E. State St., 963-6765; The Postal Shoppe, Edgebrook Center, 397-7301; and Tin Whistle, N. Main & Auburn, 963-0270; or by mail with check and SASE, 10928 N. Main, Rockton, IL 61072.
