Sixteen members of the Rockford All-Stars Track and Field Team competed at the Amateur Athletic Union Tri-State Regional Meet at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., this past weekend (July 13-15). This elite group of athletes qualified for the regional meet by finishing in the top eight at the AAU State Championships, held in Rockford June 16-17.
As a result of their outstanding performances in Bloomington, seven members of the Rockford team have qualified to advance to the AAU National Championships which will be held in Knoxville, Tenn., July 25-Aug. 4.
The All-Stars were led by gold medal efforts from Christina Shields in the pentathlon and Alexis Sorensen in the high jump. Shields also gathered a silver medal in the long jump. Lena-Winslows Katie Jobes took home silver in the young womens high jump.
Kendrick Branch, a student at Rockford Jefferson High School, brought home a silver medal in the high jump. Jatavian Foote finished second in the 80-meter hurdles and third in the 200-meter dash. Madeline Schmell and Anna Taylor also qualified to make the trip to Knoxville. Schmell finished fourth in the high jump, and Taylor finished fourth in the discus.
