Two-week archaeological field school workshops offered

Two-week archaeological field school workshops offered

William Rainey Harper College’s Summer Archaeological Program is offering two sessions of a field school workshop this year. Session 1 runs from July 7-18, and session 2 runs from July 21 to Aug. 1. The two workshops will be offered at prehistoric and historic sites at Macktown in Rockton.

The workshops are held in cooperation with Midwest Archaeological Research Services, Inc. (MARS).

Participation in archaeological excavations has been traditionally reserved for students pursuing advanced degrees in anthropology or other related fields of study. This training has involved the commitment to semester-long periods of time spent in the development of archaeological techniques and theory. Due to requests for shorter periods of archaeological exposure, William Rainey Harper College now offers two two-week-long periods of summer school workshops conducted by MARS.

Archaeological workshops have full academic standing. William Rainey Harper College grants three hours of credit to any student successfully completing the summer course of study. No previous archaeological experience is necessary. High school seniors are also eligible to apply. Applications are subject to the approval of the William Rainey Harper College coordinator and the director of the field school. As a course requirement, a research paper concerning the survey, excavation and field techniques employed shall be submitted to Mr. Norris, professor of anthropology at Harper College, no later than a week after the finished field session. (Prior to the sessions, the nature of the paper will be discussed with all of the students participating in the field school.)

Fees per two-week workshop are:

For students residing within Harper College District: Instructional fees (MARS)—$375; course credits (Harper)—$185, total cost $561. For students not residing within the college district: Instructional fees (MARS)—$375; course credits (Harper)—$609.74, total cost $984.74.

Tuition rates are subject to change without notice. There will be a summer school activity fee of $16 and a flat registration fee of $10, as well as a technical fee of $4 per credit hour and a renovation fee of $1.25 per credit hour.

Payment steps:

Out-of-district students will remit $609 plus fees for each three-hour course desired.
