Upper Palette: Tom Mac’s new album

Upper Palette: Tom Mac’s new album

By Molly Fleming, Staff Writer

Local musician Tom Mac will be releasing a solo CD this year titled Upper Palette. Originally set for release Dec. 31, 2002, the album was held a few weeks for further polishing and will be available for listeners sometime in January. The jazz influenced folk nine-song disk includes original compositions by Mac as well as jazz standards and has been in the works since 2001.

Mac is well known in Rockford for his folk/pop groups that frequently perform at Café Patou, Paragon and other local venues that host jazz and jazz-influenced music. Mac also has the ability to bring in well-known musicians of great status to perform with him, such as saxophonist Marc Colby and drummer Paul Wertico, who have both performed with him in the summer of 2002 in Rockford.

The recording of the new CD took place in Chicago, Austin, Texas, and Sedona, Ariz.. Artists included on Upper Palette are world-renowned guitarist Stanley Jordan, seven-time Grammy Award winner and drummer Paul Wertico, as well as Roscoe Beck and Larry Gray on bass and John Moulder on guitar, as well as others. People might remember Moulder from the concert he put on at the Sinnissippi Band Shell in summer 2001 when his guitar playing and arrangements had the audience speechless.

With a lineup of such well-seasoned musicians, Upper Palette should prove to be a musical mix-up of the best. The CD has been engineered and mastered by Daniel Leake, who has 23 Gold Records to his credit and has worked with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson and Sting. The exact date for the CD release party will be announced this month, so keep your eyes open.
