U.S. bronze medalist skates at Carlson April 1

U.S. national bronze medalist and Olympic figure skating competitor Matt Savoie will be the featured skater in an April 1 program at Carlson Ice Arena.

The Northern Illinois Skating Club will present Olympic Idol with Savoie. The program will start at 4:10 p.m. Tickets are $5. Rockford-area skaters will entertain the audience while the audience picks the winners in this fun, audience-participation event like the American Idol TV show.

Local pro Gene Heffron, a skating pro for 36 years, has worked with Savoie for many years. Savoie, of Peoria, won the bronze medal in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January in St. Louis, Mo., before participating in the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, in 2006. Savoie has also skated in numerous ice shows at the two local ice facilities because of the local tie. Heffron is one of a handful of pros working with youngsters and adults at the two Park District ice facilities.

Tickets to the show are $5 in advance, and are available at Carlson Ice Arena, 4150 N. Perryville Rd., or may be purchased at the door if available. Donations to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be accepted. This is an incredible opportunity to have a lot of fun, be entertained with some great skating, and experience an up-close performance from 2006 Olympian Matt Savoie.
