Through its new C.A.R.E. (Community Action Recycling Effort) program, U.S. Cellular is asking its customers and associates in northern Illinois and nationwide to donate their used wireless phones for a good cause. From Jan. 14-March 31, each wireless phone brought to a U.S. Cellular retail store, authorized agent location or corporate headquarters will be used for charity. Proceeds generated from the collected phones will benefit the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, a program of the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of America. The Fund is dedicated to providing educational assistance for post-secondary study to financially needy dependents of those killed or permanently disabled in the Sept. 11 attacks.

“U.S. Cellular is proud to lead this initiative and help our customers in northern Illinois reach out to the families of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks,” said Julia Eystad, director of sales. “With more than 30 million used wireless phones lying idle in American homes and businesses, this is an opportunity for our customers and associates to support an organization that promotes education and lifelong learning, as well as help those trying to recover from the events of that terrible day.”

The company is accepting any portable cellular or digital phone, excluding bag phones or vehicle-installed models; the phones need not be in working order. U.S. Cellular will also take the phone’s battery or charger, if available. Collection bins will be located at all U.S. Cellular retail stores and authorized agent locations both in this area and across the country. The program has been launched in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless Foundation and ReCellular, Inc., a leading re-manufacturer of wireless equipment.

The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund was created to provide educational assistance for post-secondary study to financially needy dependents of those killed or permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, and during the rescue activities relating to those attacks. Former President Clinton and former Senator Dole are serving as co-chairs of the campaign fund effort. For more information on the Fund, visit www.familiesoffreedom.org.
