U.S. flag retirement ceremony set

Civil Air Patrol event June 17 at Loves Park Field of Honor

At 7 p.m., Saturday, June 17, the Rockford Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol will conduct a flag retirement ceremony at Loves Park Field of Honor.

The retirement ceremony, which will be conducted in accordance with policies established by the United States Air Force and the Civil Air Patrol, is for U.S. flags that have become worn and tattered.

The Civil Air Patrol is the Auxiliary of the United States Air Force, and is composed of cadet and senior members. Cadet members are age 12 to 21 and senior members are older than 21.

The Civil Air Patrol maintains a three-fold mission, including emergency services, aerospace education and cadet programs. The flag retirement ceremony is part of the Civil Air Patrol’s cadet programs.

The Rockford Composite Squadron is composed of 18 cadets and 15 senior members.

Ashes from the retired flags will be scattered by air at a later date. Flags may be dropped at Akerman’s Professional Shoes, 3518 E. State St., Rockford, the Winnebago Library, 210 N. Elida St., Winnebago, and the Rochelle VFW. Flags may also be dropped off at the site of the ceremony between 6 and 7 p.m. the evening of the ceremony. The public is welcome to attend.
