Viewpoint: 9/11 questions still unanswered

There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle.—Alexis de Tocqueville

The Bush administration is twisting and turning in all directions, trying to escape the mounting heat generated as more and more evidence of its lies and misdeeds become public.

Republicans have launched an effort to prevent the showing of Michael Moore’s new film Fahrenheit 9/11. Using a group called Move America Forward, the individuals behind it are trying to intimidate theater owners and branding the movie “anti-American.”

Fahrenheit 9/11 is to open in 700 theaters Friday. No doubt it will draw unrelenting vitriol from the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity, who will continue to confuse and blend blind nationalism with patriotism and creeping fascism with democracy.

Who is Move America Forward? Turns out it is a public relations firm in Sacramento, Calif., called Russo, Marsh and Rogers. The company has close ties to the GOP. Sal Russo was an adviser to the “Recall Grey Davis” campaign. Another principal, Howard Kaloogian, is a former Republican candidate for the Senate and was chairman of the Davis recall committee. He also carried out a smear campaign against CBS and Viacom to stop them from airing the miniseries The Reagans.

It later was shown on cable’s Showtime channel at 8 p.m., Nov. 1, 2003.

Others in the group are Douglas Lorenz, a Republican activist, and Melanie Morgan, a right-wing talk radio host on KFSO, San Francisco. She declared: “It would be more appropriate to have this propaganda shown at al-Qaeda training camps rather than American movie theaters.” Morgan is vice chairman of Move America Forward.

“Fahrenheit 9/11 serves one purpose and one purpose only,” said Kaloogian, “to undermine the United States’ war against terrorism.”

One of those in Moore’s corner is former New York Governor Mario Cuomo. Cuomo said: “Moore’s film offers the opportunity to elect more intelligently than ever before.” Cuomo said he will try to get a PG-13 rating for the film rather than an R rating.

Moore has said that while he wants to see Bush out in November, he has not endorsed John Kerry and doesn’t consider his movie as particularly anti-Bush. He calls himself a political independent.

“The issues I’m raising in this film are going to be with us a year from now, regardless of who’s in the White House,” Moore said. “I do not want my work of art to be reduced to a Bush vs. Kerry thing. If Kerry’s in the White House, I’ll keep my camera on him.”

Move America Forward has twice altered its database in an effort to hide its true ownership.

9/11 decommissioned

Speaking of hiding things, last week, we saw the wrap-up of the 9/11 coverup commission hearings. The final report is due next month after Bush and company get through editing out anything of substance.

Ultimate substance was lacking in the hearings. The “independent” commission asked mainly easy, “cream puff” questions, guaranteed not to bring out anything embarrassing or shocking.

But there was some embarrassment, at least for the FBI and the Justice Department. After the commission spent a good deal of time regurgitating much of the official cover story about 9/11, another “hijacker” named by the FBI turned up alive and well. He was supposed to be dead, killed as one of the 9/11 attackers.

Waleed al Shehri, a Saudi Arabian pilot, was one of five hijack suspects named by the FBI as aboard Flight 11 when it hit a tower of the World Trade Center. Shehri told reporters he had nothing to do with the attacks in New York and Washington. Shehri said he left the U.S. last September and now works for Saudi Arabian airlines. He said he is taking additional training in Morocco.

Another suspect was identified as Abdulaziz al Omari, also said to be on Flight 11. Al Omari said he is an engineer with Saudi Telecoms and claims he lost his passport while studying in Denver. A second man with the same name has turned up. He said he is a pilot with Saudi Arabian airlines.

In addition, the Asharq al Awsat newspaper claims it has interviewed Saeed Alghamdi, another hijack suspect. The FBI said he was on the United Airlines flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. There also is some indication that another suspect, Khalid al Midhar, also may be alive.

It seems the government really doesn’t know who was on those planes, and it has offered no proof that any of the named 19 suspects were on those flights. The celebrated ring leader, Mohamed Atta, was portrayed as a fanatical Islamic fundamentalist. In fact, those who lived near Atta and his colleagues in Florida described him as a “party animal.” His ex-girlfriend said his favorite food was pork chops, an item forbidden to devout Muslims.

During the 9/11 Commission hearings, we were asked to believe a preposterous story cooked up by the commission and NORAD, the North American Air Defense Command. These two entities tried to sell the story that on Sept. 11, NORAD failed to promptly launch any interceptors because communications were poor between the air traffic controllers, NORAD, the Pentagon, the White House and others concerned.

Since the end of World War II, the U.S. has spent literally trillions of dollars to create NORAD to protect this nation against surprise attack. An essential component of that system is a highly sophisticated communications and monitoring system. The head of NORAD offered the lame excuse that “the U.S. has never faced this threat before.”

The system dealt with just that kind of thing more than 60 times before 9/11 and several times since. In each case, it functioned smoothly, and the resulting interceptions were flawless. Yet, on Sept. 11, after spending all that money, time and training, the plan did not work. Many claim the failures of that day were no accident; they were part of a plan.

Accordingly, the main question remains: how could four commercial jet liners fly hijacked for nearly an hour-and-a-half on the morning of 9/11, without any Air Force fighter-interceptor jets turning a wheel until it was too late?

Canadian journalist Barrie Zwicker produced a powerful TV documentary that presented the events of that day and posited that the U.S. government was complicit in the attacks. Fortunately for Dubya and all other Fox News fans, we were protected from this dangerous report by having it suppressed in this country. The program is available from VISIONTV at their Web site Click on “shop.” The video tape/DVD is $29.95.

As time went on, 9/11 family members became alarmed and disgusted at the Bush administration’s efforts to block any investigation of happenings on that day.

One WTC widow, Ellen Mariani, filed a lawsuit against Bush & co. under the RICO racketeering act. She charged the president with foreknowledge of the attacks, willfully allowing them to occur for political gain, and engaging in criminal obstruction of the 9/11 investigations.

National media and some of the “alternative” media have mostly ignored the lawsuits. FBI agents Crowley and Wright stepped forward, along with former FBI translator Sibel Edmonds to inform the public that the U.S. government did not act on information it had that may have prevented the attacks. Edmonds told the media that National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was lying when she said the administration knew nothing of the coming attacks.

Even Minister Louis Farakkhan of the Nation of Islam declared on national television that the Bush administration allowed the attacks to happen to fool us into wars.

Today, a growing number of Americans and others are demanding to know the truth about 9/11. Canada is about to play host to the second international inquiry into 9/11, and there may be a third later.

The truth of these attacks is critical, perhaps the most vital issue facing this country. If you want to know what really happened, you are urged to get involved. Visit www.911 or www.911

Also, Voice4Change is organizing a counter move to Move America Forward’s ef

forts against Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11. They are urging citizens to use the showing of the film as a voter registration tool, as the film opens June 25 nationwide. To view their plan, go to or

Freedom of speech is ultimately protected at the ballot box.
