Viewpoint: Scary history of socialism
Back in January 1963, Rep. A.S. Herlong Jr. of Florida read into the Congressional Record a list of 45 goals of the Communist Party. The list had originally appeared in The Naked Communist by Cleon Skausen.
This is not to argue that the communists have taken over the country, but it is chilling to note how many of these objectives have been attained in the socialist mode in the last 39 years.
The first three goals on the list have not come about. They are: 1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the sole alternative to nuclear war; 2. U.S. willingness to surrender rather than fight a nuclear war; 3. Develop the idea that total disarmament by the U.S. would show moral strength.
From there on, the result is quite different. We have seen the promotion and establishment of free trade among all nations regardless of Marxist regimes and whether the trade goods could be used for war.
There has also been extension of long-term loans to Russia and its former satellites. U.S. foreign aid goes to nearly all nations regardless of what system is dominant there.
Red China has been recognized and given Most Favored Nation trade status and has been welcomed into the U.N. So have former Soviet satellite countries.
The U.S. has pulled out of the nuclear test ban treaty.
We are seeing the U.N. promoted as the only hope of mankind. Many urge that the world body be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces (NATO is suggested as the nucleus).
Another objective is to capture one or both U.S. political parties. Results of that one are open to debate.
Use court decisions to weaken basic American institutions, claiming their activities violate civil rights.
Next, get control of the schools. Use them to spread socialism and communist propaganda. Weaken the curriculum. Get control of teacher associations and put the party line into textbooks. Then gain control of student newspapers. This last does not appear to have happened.
Another objective was to use student riots to generate public protests against programs or groups being attacked by communist agents.
Yet another goal was to infiltrate the press and get control of such things as editorial writing, book reviews and get into policy making positions. Gain control of key jobs in radio, TV and movies.
Also in the entertainment area: continue to discredit American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. One U.S. cell was told to eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.
Along with that was the goal of controlling art critics and directors of art museums. Our plan, the program said, is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.
Also, eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them censorship and a violation of free speech and free press. Break down standards of morality by pushing pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, movies, radio and TV.
Still another goal stated was: present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as normal, natural and healthy.
Continuing the assault on the moral foundations of American culture: infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with social religion. Discredit the Bible and stress the need for intellectual maturity, which doesnt need a religious crutch. Also, remove prayer or any kind of religious expression in the schools on grounds it violates the principle of separation of church and state.
Now discredit the U.S. Constitution by terming it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, and a hindrance to cooperation among nations on a global basis.
Along with that, discredit the American Founding Fathers. Paint them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the common man. Also, belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the grounds it was only a minor part of the big picture. Stress Russian history after the Communists took over.
Back any socialist movement to provide central control over any part of U.S. culture, including education, social agencies, welfare programs and mental health clinics.
Still another goal: eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
Infiltrate and gain control of more unions. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
A few of the other goals include: discrediting the family as an institution. Encouraging promiscuity and easy divorce and promoting the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents.
There also was: internationalize the Panama Canal. And, establish the impression that violence and insurrection are proper aspects of American tradition, and students and special interest groups should use force to solve political, social or economic problems.
What is the next step? Where do we go from here? Is there any real national security left?
