By David Ruffin, Assistant Curator, Ethnic Heritage Museum

In celebration of Women in History Month, the Ethnic Heritage Museum will honor Dr. Margaret Taylor Goss Burroughs at a luncheon at Cliffbreakers Restaurant Saturday, March 8.

Burroughs is the principal founder and director emeritus of the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago. The DuSable Museum holds the distinction of being the first black museum in the United States.

In the world of visual arts, Burroughs is a printmaker, painter, sculptor and pen and ink artist. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, art fairs, exhibitions, colleges and universities in the United States, Mexico, Poland, Germany, China and Russia.

State Rep. Chuck Jefferson (D-Rockford) will present Burroughs with a resolution from the Illinois General Assembly of 93rd House of Representatives. The resolution, signed by Michael Mannigan, speaker of the house, will spotlight some of her accomplishments.

As an artist, author, educator and civic leader, Burroughs has been an active member of Chicago’s south side cultural community for more than 50 years. Burroughs helped form the National Conference of Artists and is the recipient of numerous honors and awards.

Doors to the “An Afternoon with Dr. Burroughs” luncheon open at 11 a.m. for a silent auction and book signing. Lunch will be served at noon. Cost is $25 per person, $200 for a table of eight. Information or reservations: 877-0649 or 962-7402.
