WEB EXCLUSIVE: Former governor receives ‘telegram from Hell’

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Ron Matekaitis sent a press release Jan. 13 in response to former Gov. George Ryan’s commutation of all death sentences for prisoners on Illinois’ death row.

The statement reads:

“Governor Ryan received a telegram from Hell today. It was from John Wayne Gacy thanking the Governor for his thoughtfulness and wishing only that Governor Ryan had been in office when he was put to death.”

Matekaitis was asked why he chose to express himself with those particular words and said the former governor’s action was “arbitrary.” He also wanted to raise the question of whether Ryan would have also commuted Gacy’s death sentence.

Gacy confessed to mudering at least 30 people in 1978. He buried many of the victims in the crawl space of his home. He was executed in 1994.
