Gustav Mahler was known in his lifetime as a brilliant conductor, but is now revered as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. He didnt simply write symphonies, he created musical universes, each filled with conflict and consolation, rage and repose, utter darkness and glorious light.
Music Director Steven Larsen and the Rockford Symphony will bring Mahlers heroic work, Symphony No. 5, to the Coronado Feb. 22, with its compelling narrative running from the opening funeral march through the agitated allegro to a scherzo and a triumphant conclusion.
In preparation for the concert, Larsen will discuss the artistic and technical demands of performing this work in a lecture sponsored by the Center for Learning in Retirement through Rock Valley College. The presentation will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Church. There is a small cost, and registration is required. For information, please contact Sarah Skaggs at 921-2609. Dont miss this thrilling sneak preview!
