WEB EXCLUSIVE: Hunger Walk 2002 best ever!
The final results of the 2002 Rockford area CROP Hunger Walk are: $19,224.50, which is $4,000 more than last year and $1,000 more than the best previous year ever (1987). This money was raised by almost 200 walkers from various Protestant churches and secular supporters, getting sponsors and walking on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002.
The Rockford area CROP Hunger Walk was one of more than 200 walks around the country that raised money for overseas hunger relief. In Rockford, 25 percent of the proceeds is returned to local hunger relief programs, mainly food pantries. The top five churches were:
Court Street United Methodist $1,616.60, followed by Second Congregational$1,358.50; Christ United Methodist$1,289; Riverside Community Church$1,210; and Our Saviors Lutheran at $1,131. Hunger Walk leader and Rockford Urban Ministries Director Stanley Campbell said: We had a wonderful turnout from the Protestant community. We hope next year to finally break the $20,000 mark, which we have been trying to do since we started in 1986.
Janet Young, regional director of Church World Service, through which most of the overseas relief funds will be distributed, said, The need this year is greater than ever, especially with the AIDS epidemic in Africa, the rebuilding of Afghanistan, and poverty in Latin America.
