WEB EXCLUSIVE: ‘National Donor Day’ at Saturn of Rockford on Valentine’s Day

By

The Northern Illinois Blood Bank (NIBB) is teaming up with Saturn of Rockford and WXXQ-98.5 FM for “National Donor Day” to be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14 at Saturn of Rockford on Perryville Road. Q-98.5 “wake-up crew” air personalities Steve Summers and Kathy Hess will be on hand to help attract potential blood donors and create awareness of the continual need to donate blood. There will be food provided by Subway and Papa John’s. The blood drive is open to the public. Donations will be taken on a walk-in basis. No appointments are necessary.

Representatives from NIBB, Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, National Marrow Donor Program and Life Goes On will be present to provide information and inspiration on all areas of donation.

Saturn of Rockford employees will also be donating blood that day, as part of the “National Donor Day” that Saturn retail facilities nationwide and their United Auto Workers partners participate in.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, the public is encouraged to give “the gift of love and life” by donating blood for someone in need. Prospective donors should be in good health, between the ages of 17 and 75, weigh at least 100 pounds and be in general good health. Since blood has a limited shelf life, the supply must be constantly replenished. Supply and demand fluctuate as well, which can create life-threatening shortages. NIBB must collect more than 700 donations needed each week in order to meet area patient needs, so it is important for healthy individuals to donate on a regular basis.

The Northern Illinois Blood Bank is the sole supplier of blood and related services to OSF Saint Anthony, Rockford Memorial, SwedishAmerican, Beloit Memorial, Edgerton Memorial Community, Freeport Health Network, Harvard Memorial, Northwest Suburban Community and Rochelle Community hospitals.
