WEB EXCLUSIVE: Rockford schools to host forum on No Child Left Behind Act

Parents, students and interested community members are invited to a Community Forum on the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. until noon, at the Ellis Arts Academy, 222 South Central Ave., Rockford. To register for childcare, call 967-8070. Coffee, juice and rolls will be provided at 8:30 a.m., and books and other prizes will also be given away at the forum.

Phyllis C. Hunter, a National Fellow at the Institute for Learning at the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh and a member of President Bush’s Education Transition Team, will serve as the forum’s keynote speaker. Her topic will be “Reading—The New Civil Right.”

Additional speakers at the forum will address other topics related to the NCLB Act including: public school choice, Reading First, plans to improve Rockford public schools, Illinois’ academic warning list and supplemental educational services, among others. The forum is sponsored by the Rockford Public Schools through a grant by the U.S. Department of Education.
