This weekend is Labor Day weekend in the stateline area and, for most people, that means only one thingOn the Waterfront. For several local racing fans, it also happens to be a pretty big weekend at Rockford Speedway. Between Saturday night and Monday afternoon, the track will crown its season champion in four different divisions.
This Saturday nights action will determine the champion in the NASCAR Late Model and Road Runner divisions. Champions will be crowned in the Short Tracker division and the All-American Sportsman division Labor Day Monday.
Jerry Gille remains atop the Late Model division. He is clinging to an 8-point lead over six-time defending track champion Ricky Bilderback. In the Road Runner division, Charlie Frisch will start the championship night with a 30-point lead ahead of John Logan Jr.
For the third year in a row, Fred Nason and Doug Bennett will battle one another for the Sportsman championship. Once again, it will be determined by the outcome of the final race of the season. Nason will come to the track Monday afternoon hoping to hold onto or better his slim 7-point lead over Bennett.
The race for the championship in the Short Tracker division is another close one. Boyce B.J. Sparkman is 15 points ahead of Tim Melvin.
Saturday night, Sept. 1, the green flag flies at 7:07 p.m., and the action continues Monday, Sept. 2, with the first race at 12:30 p.m. For more information or to reserve tickets for the championship events, call the Rockford Speedway box office at (815) 633-1500.
