Winnebago County Highway Dept. announces the Adopt-A-Road Program

County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen and Winnebago County Highway Operations Manager Dan Davis recently announce the County’s Adopt-A-Road Program. Winnebago County has 330 miles of County roads. Currently, 79 miles of roads have been adopted by 71 participants consisting of Scouts, church groups, businesses, families, and other volunteer, community and sports groups. This program was started in 1992 following a similar program used by IDOT and other states. Some of the larger townships have a reciprocal program as well. The kick-off month is April. Winnebago County Highway provides the volunteer groups with vests and bags; and groups are requested to pick up four times a year along their adopted highway. The efforts of these groups have been recognized in the past at a County Board meeting and will be done similarly this year by sending certificates listing continuous years of participation. Winnebago County encourages area businesses, groups and organizations to get involved and adopt at least one mile of a County road to help beautify area highways.
