Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott H. Christiansen, along with the County Highway Department and Health Department, have announced a partnership with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to sponsor a countywide used/waste tire collection. Additional volunteer labor is being provided by the various townships and the Winnebago County Sheriffs Departments inmate labor crew.
It is open to all counties in this region, which includes Stephenson, Ogle, DeKalb and Boone. Used tires will be accepted at the following location at the times and dates indicated:
Winnebago County Highway Department, 424 N. Springfield Ave., Rockford, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, and 8 a.m-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30.
The following IEPA guidelines apply to all tire drop-offs:
1. Tires will not be accepted from businesses such as tire dealers, gas stations, commercial trucking companies and/or anyone/ business that generates and/or accumulates tires after the collection occurs.
2. No tires from individuals out of state.
3. No large industrial/off-road tires (normally from heavy construction equipment; tractor and truck tires are excluded from this category and are acceptable for the tire collection).
4. Individuals are limited to 1,000 tires. Individuals may drop off more than 1,000 tires provided they pay the established rate set by the IEPA for each tire over the 1,000-tire limit (car = $1/truck = $5/ tractor = $15).
