Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful announces Fall Metal Mania

Annual fall metals Recycling Drive accepts fire extinguishers

Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful—the only regional affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc.—will hold its annual Fall Metals Recycling Drive Saturday, Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Machesney Park Mall parking lot south of the J.C. Penney outlet store. Last year, 120 tons of scrap metal were collected for recycling in the organization’s spring and fall metals drives, saving them from area landfills. An additional 70 tons were collected in the Spring 2006 Metals Drive.

New this fall, area residents can drop off their unwanted or used fire extinguishers for proper disposal. A-Fire Extinguisher Sales & Service, a new partner of the Metals Drive, will properly remove any remaining gases and recycle the metal canisters.

While updating your new energy-efficient appliances, be sure to dispose of your old refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers during this unique event. Other items commonly seen at the metals drive include microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, fence posts, car batteries, stainless steel sinks, gas grills, ducting, siding, ladders, lawn mowers, bicycles, shelving, horse troughs, patio furniture, trailers and satellite dishes. If the item is primarily metal, it can be accepted. This is an exceptional opportunity to dispose of metal items, regardless of where residents live or work.

“Our metals drive offers area residents an opportunity to get rid of their unwanted metals while protecting the environment,” said Lori Gummow, executive director of Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful, who is also known as the “Green Queen” for championing many area environmental efforts. “It is also extremely cost effective since most items can be dropped off for free. When you look at how much communities and landfills charge for disposing of refrigerators and other metals—if they will take them at all—Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful is offering a true bargain to our communities.”

Al Grace Appliance will again be on hand to properly handle freezers and refrigerators at an extremely low price of $10 per unit. Additionally, air conditioners, 20-pound propane tanks and computer monitors will be accepted for a charge of $10 each. Humidifiers, dehumidifiers and television sets are not accepted.

The Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful Fall Metals Drive is made possible by the generous support of Riverside Community Bank, Behr Iron and Steel and Rubloff Development Group.

Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful is in need of additional community volunteers to assist them in the metals recycling drive. Those interested in volunteering can call, (815) 637-1343, or e-mail
