Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful collecting metals

Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful (WRCB) is expecting to be overwhelmed with metal items during its Metals Recycling Drive on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The location for this one-day event is the parking lot of the former Eagle market on the southwest corner of the Riverside Boulevard and Mulford Road intersection.

It’s time to get things tidied up before the winter winds take over. Get rid of your no-longer-functioning coffee pots, aluminum siding, stainless steel sinks, aluminum cans, hot water heaters, microwaves, curling irons and any other metal product that may come to mind. If the item is primarily metal, it can be accepted. Any item containing a picture tube (televisions and monitors), however, is not acceptable.

For humidifiers, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners or other Freon- or refrigerant-containing appliances, as well as propane cylinders, Environmental & Technical Specialists (ETSI) will be on site at the Metals Drive to decant the items. There will be a $10 charge for each item. For Freon removal prior to the drive, ETSI can be contacted at (815) 873-0718. Please note that all of the appliances named are required by law to be tagged.

According to Lori Gummow, executive director for WRCB, “Most area residents don’t realize that the vast majority of home gas grills use propane cylinders that, due to new safety rules, can no longer be refilled. It is important to dispose of these cylinders responsibly. ETSI’s staff will be on hand at the Metals Drive for just this purpose.”

Sponsors for this event include Riverside Community Bank, Rubloff Development Group, Inc., Behr Iron & Steel and the Illinois National Guard. In-kind donations have been made by Gerry’s Meats & Deli of Rockford and Logli Supermarket of Loves Park.

WCRB is a non-profit, volunteer-driven environmental organization, striving to provide its communities with education and resource conservation programs. For more information on this project or to volunteer, contact the Winnebago/Rockford Clean & Beautiful office at (815) 637-1343.
