The Arc of Winnebago, Boone and Ogle counties will offer a workshop for people with disabilities and their families at 10 a.m., Friday, March 19, at 400 N. First St., Rockford.
Presenter is Steve Giebelhausen from Equip For Equality, a nonprofit organization that operates the federally mandated Protection & Advocacy System for Illinois, which safeguards the rights of children and adults with physical and mental disabilities (including developmental disabilities and mental illnesses).
The topic of discussion will be My Rights Under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
The ADA is a federal law prohibiting discrimination against people with mental and physical disabilities, including mental illnesses and developmental disabilities. The workshop will provide an overview of the rights of people with disabilities under the ADA to be protected against discrimination in the workplace, business, education, transportation, government services and other areas of community living.
Participants will learn to recognize when illegal discrimination has occurred and the steps that can be taken to solve the problem. Self-Advocates are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting. There is no charge.
