One of the most unique events in motor sports returns to the Rockford Speedway this weekend. The World Famous Trailer Race will take center stage at the track Saturday night, June 9. Past trailer races have featured trucks, Jeeps and various other SUV models pulling anything from pop-up campers and old boats to a fully-loaded hot tub.
The race usually attracts a lot of local and regional attention from fans. Typically, the stands are filled with a combination of people. There are the weekly local regulars, who never miss an event at the track. There are throngs of people, some from northern Illinois and others from the surrounding states, who only come once a year to see the trailer race. The curious first-timers usually fill up the rest of the seats. Regardless of what group you may be in, everyone seems to have a great time. It is a must-see for any race fan.
The event has even caught the eye of the national media. In prior years, television crews from SPEED Channel have been at the track to record the action. They bring in several cameras and position them around the track and infield to capture the action from every angle. Following the race, one of their hosts will interview the winner. All of the recorded video is then professionally edited and made into a 30-minute program that is televised at a later date, both nationally and internationally. Thus, the name The World Famous Trailer Race.
The trailer race will follow regularly scheduled weekly racing action. The Late Models, area sportsmen and Roadrunners will also race this Saturday night, June 9. The track will open at 5 p.m. Racing begins at 7:07 p.m. Tickets may be available for purchase the day of the race, although fans are encouraged to get their tickets in advance by calling the Rockford Speedway box office at (815) 633-1500.
