Some write-in candidates in the Nov. 7 election say they are not happy with the way the county conducted voting for write-in candidates.

“I didn’t like it,” said George Fagerstrom, who ran against Winnebago County Board member Sue McDonald in District One. “I have a problem with the whole thing, to be honest,” he said.

“You look at Florida, and you think , “Could that happen here?’” I’m told deals were cut; that nobody runs against this one or that one. I was told how the thing would end up,” Fagerstrom said.

Jim Hughes, who ran a write-in campaign against Kris Cohn, county board chairwoman, said: “They didn’t consider us a priority, I guess.”

Hughes said he believes there should be some changes in the voting procedure where write-ins are concerned. “Some things should be changed,” he said. “The (election) judges should be required to have a list showing write-in candidates and it should be posted where the voters can see it,” Hughes said.

He said the judges had a list of the write-in candidates and the offices they were seeking but they kept it in a folder which was not shown to the voters.

Winnebago County Clerk John Schou said “It has been traditional to finish the machine vote and then count the write-ins the next day. We’ve never been in a rush to get it done next.”

Schou said his staff is so exhausted after working until midnight that he closes the election office until the next day. He said no major problems developed on election night and everything went smoothly.

The election results were being certified Tuesday by election officials and officials of both major parties.

Fagerstrom said he had asked to watch the votes tabulated election night. “I was told I wouldn’t be permitted in there, except for the press room,” he said. “The stuff I’m seeing is a pattern across the nation. It’s too much of what’s going wrong in the county,” Fagerstrom said.

Schou denied there was any attempt to exclude third party candidates from observing the count. He said he was not aware that General Election
