A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column soliciting photos and stories about sports-related tattoos. With the proliferation of tattoo shops and the amount of skin ink I witnessed at this years On the Waterfront Festival, I thought I would be inundated with responses. Im saddened to report that thus far I have only received one response.
It was a great one, though! Mike Schimmeyer from Tampa, Fla., sent me an e-mail and a photo of his New York Yankees tattoo. The story about how he came across the column is almost as interesting as his tattoo. He told me the company he works for receives products from a company in the northern Illinois area, and one of those items happened to be wrapped in a copy of The Rock River Times. He read the paper, and decided to send me his story.
Mike is originally from New Jersey, and moved to Tampa a couple of years ago. So, as a going-away gift to himself, he had the Yankees logo tattooed on his upper right arm. He had it done at Shottsies Tattoo Parlor in Pompton Plains, N.J. He says, Shottsies is a well-known parlor which has been featured in numerous magazines, and they do amazing work!
Friends of his love the tattoo, whether they are Yankees fans or not. Even a Red Sox fan told me it looks really cool, he said.
Mike proudly concluded his e-mail by proclaiming, Im a diehard Yankees fan and will be until the day I die. Hes even got the tattoo to prove it.
Ive decided to keep this as an open and ongoing column. If you or someone you know has a sports-related tattoo, please send me a photo along with the story behind the tattoo. Ill plan on using them every so often in future columns. You can e-mail me at DOUGSTER61@AOL.COM, or you can send them via regular mail to me at The Rock River Times, 128 N. Church St., Rockford, IL 61101.
