Youth Government Weekend begins Sept. 28

CARBONDALE—Southern Illinois University Carbondale holds its fourth annual Youth Government Weekend Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28.

Sponsored by the SIU Public Policy Institute, directed by former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon, the event brings high school juniors and seniors to campus for a discussion of politics and leadership issues.

Government and civics teachers are encouraged to attend with three or four of their top students who have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in the issues. Discussion with state and local leaders will conclude with a picnic at Simon’s home in rural Makanda.

“We need to involve young people in developing the future of our nation,” said Simon. “Youth Government 2002 is one way to recognize the students’ potential and to encourage them to get personally involved in our democracy.”

The Public Policy Institute coordinates the free event. Advanced registration is required. For more information, please contact Julie A. Kaiser at (618) 453-4046, or by e-mail at
