Youth Orchestra offers ‘Music for Mom’ May 14

Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) will sponsor a special Mothers’ Day Brunch—“Music for Mom”—from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, May 14, at Paragon on State.

The fund-raising event celebrates mothers while helping support the region’s premiere, full-training symphony orchestra for middle and high school students.

Live music will be provided by several current members of the RSYO, the Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) and several RSYO alumni.

The buffet brunch is $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 and younger (half of each reservation is tax deductible).

Reservations are required by May 5 and may be made by calling the RSO at 965-0049.

Students from a five-county area compose RSYO. The youth orchestra began in 1965 under the direction of Don Zimmerman, and continues as the premiere youth orchestra in northern Illinois. The youth symphony celebrates the 40th anniversary season this year.

Young musicians in RSYO attend weekly rehearsals and are exposed to full orchestra repertoire they would not encounter in their school orchestra or band program.

Also, RSO musicians serve as sectional coaches for brass, strings, woodwinds and percussion, giving the students additional instruction to prepare them for larger ensemble playing.
