The Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) will perform their spring concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 30.
The concert will be at Coronado Theatre in Rockford.
The RSYO performs under the direction of conductor Alison Gaines. Tickets are on sale through the RSO Box Office at 815-965-0049, or on the RSO Web site at . The cost is $6 for students and $10 for adults.
Special guests for this performance include Hellen Weberpal of Sycamore, who won first prize at the 2005 RSO/Rock Valley College Concerto Competition. Weberpal will perform the cello concerto by Edward Elgar.
Also on the program is the chorale from Highland Community College under the direction of Allen Redford. A reception will be held immediately following the concert in the Coronado rehearsal room, honoring graduating seniors in the orchestra.
Students from a five-county area comprise the RSYO. The Youth Orchestra began in 1965 under the direction of Don Zimmerman, and continues as the premier youth orchestra in northern Illinois offering full orchestra training. The youth symphony celebrates the 40th anniversary season this year.
Young musicians in the RSYO attend weekly rehearsals and are exposed to full orchestra repertoire they would not encounter in their school orchestra or band program.
Also, RSO musicians serve as sectional coaches for brass, strings, woodwinds and percussion, giving the students additional instruction to prepare them for larger ensemble playing.
