Christmas arrived early for the YWCA, 4990 E. State St., which received a $100,000 gift to pay off its mortgage from Dan and Ruth Nicholas.

The Nicholases gave the money to the YWCA through the Rockford Community Foundation. The YWCA still needs $350,000 to complete the mortgage payment.

Dan Nicholas said he donated the gift because he is a new member of the Foundation board, and he sought to establish a donor-advised fund with the Foundation.

Nicholas also has worked on behalf of the YWCA for more than 40 years. “I have been with them and their difficult times with the old property, helping them solve the swimming pool problem, the roof problem” he stated. “I have helped them raise money in the past. When they decided to change their mission and accept a new site, I became reinterested.”

He said for the last few years, he wasn’t involved with the YWCA. Nicholas said the move and the YWCA’s need influenced his decision to give such a hefty donation.

Nicholas said he gave the donation as a challenge gift, intending to get the community involved. “I’m asking the community to step forward to help pay off the YWCA mortgage on the new property,” Nicholas stated.
