Thunder Update: Osterman helps guide National Team to World Cup gold
The Rockford Thunder were off last week, but that didn’t stop Cat Osterman from making national headlines with the USA Softball Women’s National Team.
Osterman has missed the last 10 games with the Thunder because of her commitment with the National team, and the Thunder have felt the absence of their ace as they have fallen eight games behind the first-place Chicago Bandits.
Team USA faced off against Australia in the championship game of the World Cup, which was played in front of 4,737 fans at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Starting pitcher Monica Abbott led team USA to a 3-1 lead, until she was taken out in the top of the sixth inning with two runners on base and nobody out. Team USA looked to the Thunder’s own Cat Osterman to record the final three outs and lock down the win for team USA.
Osterman did what she does best as she struck out the only three batters she faced, giving herself her second save of the season, and team USA the gold medal.
With an 18-0 record, the USA Softball Women’s National Team finished its season with two gold medals—in the Canada Cup and the World Cup.
Osterman will return to the Thunder as they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Force in a five-game series. Osterman’s presence with the Thunder will be sure to improve the team’s slumping record. Even after missing 10 games, Osterman still holds the record for most strikeouts this season with 69 and will look to add to that total against the Force.
The Thunder have three series left, all of which are on the road, and they will take on the Force (6-20), the USSSA Pride (8-14) and the Bandits (20-6).
Time is running out on this season, and the Thunder need to make a run before the playoffs begin in Akron, Ohio.
