ArtsPlace ‘EMERGE’ opens at Auburn Freshman Campus

Emerging visual and performing artists opened the ArtsPlace “EMERGE” exhibit last night at Auburn Freshman Campus.
The program’s therapeutic drama and dance teams performed original pieces arranged during the eight-week apprenticeship. Thirty performing artists make up the dance and drama teams.
Painting and sculpture from 20 visual artists is also being shown. Visual art includes painting, sculpture and printmaking.
ArtsPlace is presented by the Rockford Area Arts Council. This year marks the 14th year of the program.
“Hats-off to the ArtsPlace apprentices and artists for an excellent job of bringing the arts to life for this spectacular event,” Rockford Area Arts Council Executive Director Anne O’Keefe said.
Apprentices work in teams of Rockford area youth, age 14 to 18. Each group is led by a professional teaching artist. Young artists are selected by the Arts Council based on portfolio of prior work and other criteria.
“ArtsPlace is a great way for this age group to spend the summer,” teaching artist Kathryn Martin said. “It helps them build confidence, valuable work skills and it fosters creativity.”
Today’s performances start at 2 p.m. Visual art will be on display and available for sale until 4 p.m.
The Auburn Freshman Campus is at at 520 N. Pierpont. Cost is $6. More information about ArtsPlace is at www.artsforeveryone.com.
